This is so because a person must train their own self on how to train a dog before they can in fact train a dog. Learning how to tame a dog is something that is not innate. The advice below will help move that learning process along.

Make sure you aren’t enforcing bad behavior without meaning to. Thus, you must not reward the dog if it does something you are working to stop. For instance, do not pet the dog lovingly if it jumps on you the minute you arrive home if this is something you are attempting to cure.

Keep your tone of voice consistent when training dogs. This lets them know you’re serious and that they must obey. The dog will also know the difference when you give them discipline as opposed to a command.

One of the very first commands you should teach a new puppy is the “leave it” command, which tells them to drop an item and step back from it. You can protect their safety and stop them from destroying valuables by teaching them to obey this simple command.

A first step to training a puppy is get him used to hearing his name. Call his name every time you do something or want him to do something. Teach him that he needs to run to you when his name is called. You should make sure your puppy learns their name and knows to respond to it. Spending lots of time will create a strong bond with your puppy, and will lead to unbreakable trust. This way he or she will be more open to some advanced training.

Desensitize your dog to the cause of their barking in order to reduce the behavior. It can be a sound, or being face to face with other people or other animals. Once used to these things, your pet will know that barking is not necessary.

Teach your puppy to wear a collar while playing before you train him to use a leash. When he is comfortable in the collar, he’ll be ready to learn how to walk on a leash, too.

Does your dog have a problem with biting furniture or even other people? If so, then spray them with a mist of water. This will teach your dog that there are certain behaviors that are unacceptable. Eventually, they won’t do these behaviors anymore and your dog will be obedient and playful.

Don’t reward or ignore bad behavior because you want to put a stop to it. If you do, he’ll think he’s the boss. For example, if you give a treat to stop your dog from barking, you are teaching him to bark for treats.

Each time that you use your dog’s name as a warning or a reprimand, try to use it three to five other times in a positive way. Your canine friend needs to know that his name is a good thing, as he should always feel safe coming to you when his name is called out.

If you catch your puppy gnawing on an object that doesn’t belong to them, stop the behavior right away. This helps teach them that they cannot chew on some things and can help them leave your belongs alone when you’re not watching.

Older Dogs

Know an older dog’s limits. Most older dogs will be harder to train since their own personalities have already settled in. Keep in mind that older dogs tend to have ingrained routines already. Embrace their not so bad behaviors and focus on retraining their negative behaviors.

Now that the people who are interested in training their new pet dog have, hopefully, learned some new tricks, they can proceed to pass them along to their pets. Once a dog is on its way to learning, the owner will begin to appreciate the dedication that he or she has shown for doing the right thing for man’s best friend.

Training a dog actually involves training the owner.
