Shortly thereafter, that enjoyment sometimes turns to irritation and possibly even regret. Your frustrations will mount with each mess you clean up. You will be able to find happiness in being a pet owner once again. This article has great tips for training your dog.

Have a good reward system when training your dog. Treats are great to give your dog when he does something good, but timing is very important when doing so. Dogs will not understand why you are rewarding them if you wait too long to do it.

Repetition is the key to success when teaching a dog a new command. It may take 25-50 tries before your dog understands a command consistently and thoroughly. Continue trying the same command and be patient, your dog will get it.

Training is an ongoing process – your dog needs to be constantly reminded of the rules! A lot of owners will train their dogs once and not conduct any refreshers. Dogs are much like humans, in the sense that they share the same habitual learning system. For this reason, you need to reinforce what your dog has learned in training or better still, teach him a new trick every now and then.

Let any dog you approach sniff your hand first so he can smell you. This helps the dog become familiar with your scent and engenders trust. When the dog becomes familiar with your smell, he will not fear you and will respond to your commands easier.

When your pet jumps on you, squeeze its paws lightly. This will make it know jumping is not something that you want it to do. If done lightly, it won’t hurt the dog, but it’ll make them uncomfortable. It won’t take much time for your dog to associate the unpleasant squeeze with jumping on a person, and he will quickly refrain from doing so.

Leashes can be a new concept for puppies, so have them begin preparing for it by wearing a collar during playtime. Having the dog comfortable in wearing its collar is crucial and it will be able to give the dog its identification in case it takes it off.

Praise your dog often when training him. Smile at your dog and give them treats to reinforce good behavior. Just be sure you never reward your dog after a bad behavior.

All of the things you teach your dog are going to be a part of their behavior and personality. If you send your dog the wrong message with teasing or roughhousing, he may have problems interpreting your actions and acting accordingly. Mold your dog into the pet you want by constantly working towards the behavior you desire.

Don’t give up on training your dog, no matter what. Unless you constantly enforce desirable behaviors, the training is unlikely to be effective. You always need to keep training your dog, just like you need to continue feeding it and providing it shelter.

If you catch your puppy chewing on things, stop him. Switch out the inappropriate object for an item that belongs to your puppy to allow him to realize what is and is not okay.

Be careful if you are going to introduce your dog to other animals. Imagine the animal in your home already, before making the commitment to bringing another one home with you. Choose a pet who has a personality that corresponds to yours.

Take action against barking that occurs out of boredom. A dog who barks when bored has an owner who is not attending to its needs. This is a sign that the dog lacks suitable outlets for his energies. To help him spend his energy, go on a walk or spend some time playing with him. And when you aren’t there, give him some chew toys to keep him distracted.

There are many elements to canine training; patience may be the most important. The ideas above are sure to pave the way toward a lasting, rewarding friendship between you and your pet. It will take some time, but having consistent training will make a happier home environment for you both.

The day your new puppy comes home with you will be filled with joy.
