Many people think that the only reason why dogs are trained is to get them to obey their masters and do whatever they are commanded to do. However, this notion is very misplaced and in fact most people train their dogs to make the bond between them and their pets stronger and also to increase the safety that the dog as well as other people will feel and have in the company of each other. Security dogs need to be trained to ensure that they understand how to react to their owners being attacked and how far they should take a defense. Dogs should be trained in order for them to play their role in offering security the way they should. Dogs should be trained in order for them to play their role in offering security the way they should.

Training a security dog becomes futile if the dog does not understand the lessons and it is therefore important to ensure it does. Because puppies have not formed any defined characters and they can easily be shaped, they are easier to train. If the dog being trained is an adult, then different techniques and training methods would have to be used. This is mainly because one has to train it to change what it already knows and become a different dog. For large and small dogs alike, regardless of their ages, the most important training technique is getting them to learn how to obey commands. This initial lesson is called obedience training and at first involves teaching the K9 to recognize its name and how to respond to it. Obedience training can then gradually evolve to other commands such as how to respond when the dog owner is in danger.

When a dog learns to obey, it is said to have passed the most important stage of training as all other commands and lessons will fall in place easily. After passing the obedience stage, a trained dog, or one in training, understands and obeys commands and knows when its owner is in danger and what is expected of it in terms of offering protection. After the training, dogs also understand that they should not attack people unless they sense danger and they are therefore trained how to tell what is dangerous and what is not. This lesson should be taught with more vigilance to security dogs that need to offer more security such as police officers and guards.

Dog owners know that dogs have to be trained if they are to offer the kind of security require of them.
