You have made a wonderful decision! Now what do you do? Good training will leave you and your pooch feeling happier. These tips will make it easy to train your dog in just the right way.
If you want to teach your pet to use a crate, first try these simple tricks. If they don’t want to go in the crate, try luring them in with a treat or chew bone. Your dog will want the bone and will be unable to resist entering the crate. If they do go into the crate, offer up praise and a treat.
Small steps, gentle ways and patience are all a part of getting your puppy used to their crate. Once he is comfortable walking in and out of the crate, try quietly closing the door and offering him a biscuit through the wires. Start off with small periods, for example 10 seconds or so, and gradually increase crate time. If the dog becomes overwhelmed, it means that you are moving too quickly for them.
Chew Toys
Give them chew toys for pain relief while teething, and keep everything else out of reach. Instead of allowing it to continue chewing on your important furniture or toys, provide a well-loved chew toy. Chew toys are essential for puppies who are experiencing pain from teething. A great alternative is a frozen wash cloth.
Do not tie a couple of dogs closely together. They could tangle the chains in such a way so that one or both of the dogs are stuck or injured. If one dog is larger than the other, it could accidentally tangle the cord around the smaller dog’s neck, causing it to become unable to breath, and possibly die.
Try not to reinforce bad behavior in your dog by accident. In other words, you must avoid showering your pet with treats or rewards in response to performing some unwanted behavior. If you wish to keep your dog from begging for table scraps, don’t encourage him by slipping him a morsel one night or allowing others to do so.
Keep treats on hand to reward your pet for doing good. The first step is a simple “lay” command. Next, hold the treat close to the floor near its head, and bring it up over the dog’s head as you place it on the other side. The dog ought to follow his treat with the nose, prompting him to flop his entire body over. Say “roll over” as he performs the action so that he’ll learn the command. It will take some work, but keep on trying!
Make sure to use the exact same tone with your dog every time you give him a command. The tone should be firm, so your dog understands that you are issuing a command, not a suggestion. Doing this also ensures that your dog will know the difference between your “you’re in trouble” voice and your “do as I say” voice.
Use short training sessions. Because dogs do not have a long attention span, short lessons will keep them from getting bored. Instead, have multiple, short sessions with breaks for playtime in between.
A properly trained dog is proud and content and his owner is usually quite pleased as well. Once you start incorporating the tips you’ve seen here, you will both be headed for happier times.
