Having a well-trained dog can provide your home with a happy balance. A well-trained dog means that you both know what to expect from each other. Once a dog is trained, no one will have to worry about leaving the animal home alone. It might not have been an easy road, but you will soon know that the time you spent on training your dog will have been worth it.
Make sure that you set a calm tone whenever you set foot in a room where your dog is. Play time is beneficial to your dog, however, you need to teach your dog to be calm as you enter any room. When you enter the room, ignore excessive agitation on your dog’s part. By ignoring the behavior, you will extinguish it.
Get your dog the proper nutrition required for canine health. A bad diet can cause your dog many problems. It can negatively impact a dog’s health and disposition. Making sure your dog’s nutritional needs are met helps give them the focus that they need to be able to learn.
Make sure that your dog stays awake and active. Dogs get bored just as easily as children. Conditions of boredom are not conducive to training. When your dog is happy and well-exercised, he will be more willing to pay attention to his training. It is a great idea to take your dog out on runs or walks through the neighborhood.
Modify and update your dog’s training as necessary, so he remains in compliance with the rules. Many times, owners feel that since their animals have gone through canine training, they can just forget about it. Some dogs will revert back to negative behaviors if the training does not continue. Your dog must follow the rule system strictly.
When training your dog, keep track of time during each session. Spending too long on training exercises will start to bore the dog. Do not spend more than 10 minutes on each session.
Whenever the dog jumps upon you, grab its paws and give them a soft squeeze so they know it is not okay to jump on humans. As long as you gently squeeze their paws, you won’t cause harm to your dog. Instead, you’ll just give them an comfortable feeling. Since it is so uncomfortable, they’ll avoid jumping on people.
Use primary reinforcement when training your dog. You need to give your dog a treat if they are good. Some common reinforcements include your dog’s favorite treat or a belly rub. When he likes the outcome, he’ll be more likely to follow your commands.
It is not good for a puppy to train too often, it will wear it out if it has to process too much information. Brief, simple, positive training sessions are well-suited to the limited supply of energy and attention a pup has to work with. If you try to do too much, the puppy will probably not remember much except that it was an unpleasant experience, and that will make it more difficult when the time comes for the next training session.
Training your dog is essentially establishing relationship rules, and, like with people, enjoyment with each other will be so much more since the groundwork has been established. Don’t forget to continue providing reinforcement. Do not let him stray from good behavior over time, and stay firm if he does. After you have laid the groundwork with your dog, the sky is the limit.
