Training Your Dog Basics That Everyone Should Know
Many negative behaviors and habits can be removed from a dog. What is more, all of the positive traits associated with dogs like obedience, faithfulness, and respect, can be included with the correct training regimen. Any pet can be an ideal one if trained properly.
Make the dog know that the crate is it’s home when you are doing crate training. You should put their food in the crate when they eat, but leave the door open. This will create a good association between the crate and their food.
There are several techniques to make crate training your dog easier. If your puppy doesn’t like being in his crate, put a dog treat or chew bone in it and close the door to keep him out. If a dog sees something in the crate that they want, they will desire to enter it. After your dog goes into the crate, give positive reinforcement to increase the chance that he will go into the crate again.
When you correct your dog verbally, ensure your corrections are direct and short. Never ramble on about the dog’s failures. Simply say no and direct them to what you want them to do instead. You should also be certain that your voice is loud enough to get their attention, but also conveys seriousness.
Stay with the training, so that he doesn’t forget the lessons that he learned. Keep him in practice. Most owners think training once is all that it takes. Pets are creatures of habit, and they need to constantly be taught new things. So, it’s very important that you review your training with your dog regularly.
Refrain from using extreme devices for training your dog, such as a shock collar. They may not work very well and are far too expensive. Plus, shock collars are not positive reinforcement when your dog is exhibiting proper behavior. Trying things akin to this will only cause harm to your relationship with your dog.
For a dog to become house trained you should always have them on the same feeding schedule everyday, so their elimination time is always the same. This makes it clear to your dog that he has to go outside and poop now, instead of stinking up your carpet. This will also teach your dog “hold it” until her next trip outside.
“Leave it” is an important command to teach, starting when you bring your dog home. Teaching them to “leave it” will stop them from destructive chewing and coming in contact with something that could potentially hurt them.
Positive Reinforcement
Always train your dog with positive reinforcement. Give your dog positive reinforcement if they do a good job. You should never yell at your dog, or physically harm them. Not only are those things ineffective, but they are also cruel. If you want good results, you must be positive, consistent and firm as you train your dog.
The first thing you should do when training a puppy is teach him his name. Repeat the name as much as possible, and reward your puppy when he responds. These are the commands your dog should learn before anything else. It’s important that the time spent with your puppy is quality time. Spend your time playing with your puppy. This way he will get to know you quicker and will begin to trust you faster. If the puppy trusts you, he will be easier to train later.
In order for your training to be effective, you have to understand that you’ll need to be firm. However, this doesn’t mean constantly yelling at your dog. Instead, find some balance between being firm and being loving. Maintaining a proper balance ensures that the relationship between you and your dog is strong.
Training a dog is easier than you might have previously realized. Armed with education, patience and the right philosophy, canine training is eminently feasible. The right training can help every dog thrive and be well behaved.
